SPARK ministries
Special People Advocating Recovery Kentucky
What is Spark minsitries?
A non-profit entity (with a 501 (c)(3) status) was established in Powell County by three board members (Jenell Brewer, Stephen Donithan and Lisa Coffey) out of a faith based vision/dream they share to embrace and support their community in God's love in Powell County's battle against drugs and addiction. The three used their God given talents, love and specialties to be a blessing in others' lives. Now the board has grown to six members, and many volunteers. These volunteers work tirelessly to connect people who are struggling with the much needed help and support to get them out of the chaos of addiction and into a sober and purposeful life.
What is the concern of spark?
The concern of SPARK Ministries is to start a fire (a passion) in our hometown to support those impacted by the horrendous addiction epidemic that has:
Taken lives and created a void in the lives of loved ones left behind
(ie. high overdose rates and massive grief/loss needs in our people)
Shattered personal accountability
(ie. increased incarceration and recidivism rates in the justice systems, increased dependence on government funded assistance programs with high unemployment rates, increased unplanned pregnancies and increased rates of infectious disease)
Devastated family structure
(ie. high rates of children in social service custody, an overwhelming court system, increase in grandparents raising grandchildren and lack of parental support in meeting the education, medical, basic and spiritual needs of our children across the board)
Crushed the spiritual integrity and unity of our hometown
(ie. decrease in church communities, lack of interest in closeness to higher power/spiritual expression & purpose and overall breakdown of unity in our small town)
The concern comes from the board members witnessing and experiencing the barriers to connected-ness being created by this epidemic- in the backyards of their home of Powell County. The three have been called by God to take action against this problem.
